French government could be poised to reopen shale gas debate
Prospects of a shale gas revival in France have taken an unlikely turn for the better following the announcement that the French government is set to meet environmental lobby groups to discuss relaunching exploration.
The meeting, reported by French radio station Europe 1, will take place on Tuesday, with the French government seeking approval from the environmental groups before taking another look at exploration potential in the country.
The US Energy Information Administration reported France’s shale gas reserves could exceed 180 trillion cubic feet (5.1 trillion cubic metres), enough to cover domestic consumption for 126 years.
Despite the benefits France’s shale reserves could offer, the previous administration took a hard line on hydraulic fracturing (‘fracking’).
