Shale Oil & Gas projects have similar project information management challenges to those of Oil Sands Steam Assisted Gravity Drainage (SAGD) projects. Both face environments of evolving technology, constant change and significant regulatory oversight. This drives a need for increased efficiencies in managing deliverables, processes and stakeholder communications. Today’s Shale Oil & Gas projects can benefit from lessons learned through Oil Sands SAGD projects executed over the past 20 years.
While project management practices have advanced significantly, Oil Sands SAGD projects continue to face industry challenges in information management that impact everything from drilling and water management, to reporting with regulators.
This paper outlines five lessons learned for improving results for both Projects and Operations. Each lesson learned links back to developing a project information management strategy early on that sets a foundation for success. For any type of Unconventional Oil & Gas project – Oil Sands or Shale – these projects are best executed when information is readily available and stakeholders are well informed.
