Poland shale pipeline plans to deliver decade of self-sufficiency
Polish oil pipeline operator PERN plans to build pipelines to carry crude oil from the country’s shale reserves
Polish operator PERN has announced plans to build crude oil pipelines which will be part of an overall strategy to develop the country’s oil pipeline and exploit untapped shale reserves, with more details to be released over the summer months.
Currently Poland is dependent on Russian imports as PERN operates the Polish network for oil pipelines and transports Russian crude oil into Polish and German refineries, however Poland’s shale reserves are estimated to be between 215 and 268 million tonnes – more than 10 times the Polish conventional oil reserves. This new pipeline would enable the country to be self-sufficient for more than 10 years.
