UK Government rejects fracking as solution to energy crisis

In a week when the UK Government releases a major reform of it’s Energy bill, UK Government Ministers, including the Prime Minister, David Cameron,  heard from oil companies including Shell, Centrica and Schlumberger-  who have shale gas projects in the US -   and industry experts  but have now decided against adoption of fracking to solve the nation’s energy crisis.  Experts reported that reserves of gas and oil were less than previously thought, possibly only 2 years worth of the UK’s demand, and therefore not large enough to justify adopting the new technology as there would be very little benefit to reducing household bills.

Fracking technology involves high pressure blasts of water, sand and chemicals into rock to release gas.   

A Shell spokesman said that “development will be a bit slower in Europe” due to the nature of the geology and impact on communities. “UK shale gas is unproven geologically, but we are taking a look to see what the potential might be.”
