#Total moving to the #frontiers of #exploration and production
Total’s exploration campaigns in the coming years will focus on major prospects in frontier regions. Reported Upstream Online
Building on recent exploration successes in frontier basins of South America, the Caspian Sea and Europe, the French giant hopes to have equivalent positive results from wildcats off Malaysia and Brunei.
In Brunei, Total’s Julong wildcat is drilling ahead after spudding earlier this month.
According to an analyst presentation given this week by Marc Blaizot, Total’s senior vice president of exploration, this well is aiming for an “elephant size oil prospect” in Block CA-1.
Results are expected in early December and, if positive, would extend a delta-type play in Sabah into the sultanate’s waters.
The Saujana-1 probe is set to spud off Peninsular Malaysia next month, aiming for an “elephant size” high pressure, high temperature prospect.
Using its high pressure, high temperature experiences at the Elgin-Franklin fields in the UK North Sea, Total will operate this well in PM 324 with a 70% stake.
The four-and-a-half month long wildcat will be drilled to a depth of 4500 metres and is expected to encounter temperatures up to 250 degrees Celsius.
Blaizot also highlighted the potential of Angola’s Kwanza basin where it is hoped future pre-salt carbonate wildcats in blocks 25, 39 and 40 could mirror successes across the Atlantic in Brazil. Full article available here
Total will be joining the World Frontier Exploration Congress in December (13-15). Dominique Janodet, Vice President New Business – Exploration, will be offering a keynote address at the conference highlighting how operators can meet the world’s demand for energy through riskier/frontier resource plays.
This congress will bring together leading frontier operators such as Total, Statoil, Maersk Oil, Devon Energy, HRT, Talisman and Anadarko to overcome the strategic and technical challenges of operating in frontier regions.
