Malaysia looks to increasing public transport usage to 50% by 2020

Public transportation is one of the Goverment’s 6 National Key Results Areas, or also known as NKRAs. As proposed in the NKRA, the government hopes to increase public transport usage from the current 15% to 25% by 2012, and to 50% by 2020.  In the year, there have been several project launches, including the My Rapid Transit (MRT) Project – the biggest public infrastructure project undertaken by the Government to improve the transport system. Different modes of transport such as the LRT and MRT are also being developed and upgraded.

Currently, the city capital has less than 20km of rail/million population, whereas cities such as Hong Kong and Singapore have more than 40km of rail/million population. It is expected that the population will grow from the current 6 million to 10 million by 2020.

With increased connectivity, the city state expects a major boost in commercial activities.
