What you should know about #sustainable #transport
Sustainable transport. We all know that the increasing number of population, congestion and pollution negatively impacts our environment. But did you know that sustainable transport helps reduce carbon emissions, energy demand and costs of travel?
With green issues being on everybody’s mind, John Inglish, the CEO of Utah Transit Authority is no exception. In his presentation at MetroRail 2012, John told us about how they are approaching sustainability issues while developing transit services and infrastructure in Utah – from using green technologies to putting into practice active transportation initiatives. You can learn more about sustainable transport, if you download John’s presentation here >
The main topics covered in the presentation are:
- Sustainability impacts of expanding transit
- Land use issues
- Transit usage levels
- New technology and energy sources
- Active transportation

Assessing how an infrastructure is Green in my opinion means considering the whole impact on the environment, from construction (recycling, material choice, pollution) to operations (renewable energy power systems, high performance and efficiency vehicles) in addition to the benefit that new transportation system (i.e. metro, tram) may have in reducing congestion and pollution.
