#Serco case study – Makkah Metro
Serco, a sponsor of the recent Middle East Rail 2012 event, has produced an interesting case study summarizing its achievements with the Makkah Metro project in Saudi Arabia.
In March 2010, Serco Middle East was awarded a contract by China Railway Construction Company to advise on the operation and maintenance of the Makkah Metro. CRCC had been awarded the design, build, operate and maintain contract in 2008 by the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs. The line links Makkah with the holy sites of Mina, Arafat and Muzdalifah and currently has the capacity to transport 3.5 million people who perform the Hajj annually.
Serco’s responsibilities include recruitment support, mobilisation planning, O&M training and documentation, metro rules and procedures, HSQE management, safety case development and programme management.
Key figures:
- 18.1km from Arafat to Jamarat
- 72,000 passengers per direction per hour, seven days per week
- 17 times 12 car trains with maximum per train capacity of 3028
Further information on Serco’s worldwide projects can be viewed at their website.
