Melbourne Port will reach full capacity by 2015, according to an article in The Age.
The port is already Australia’s busiest and traffic is expected to grow by up to a million containers a year.
Business groups are urging the Victorian government to begin urgent expansion and introduce a third stevedore.
The government has planned to expand Port of Hastings in regional Victoria to become an alternative container port. However, it is not expected to be operational until 2025.
The two most likely options for expanding Melbourne Port are transforming Webb Dock into a container terminal and expanding capacity at Swanson Dock.
Victorian Ports Minister Denis Napthine said several options were being considered. The state government is expected to announce plans in early 2012.
