An article by the Jakarta Globe said that Indonesia’s economy will grow at 6.4% this year, faster than last year’s 6.1%. Private consumption and investment growth will continue to power the economy as Indonesia embarks on a decade of robust economic growth.

A report from Standard Chartered Bank, released on Tuesday, however, said it believed “the prospects for Indonesia’s annual GDP growth to reach its full potential of 8-9%, will depend on the government’s ability to accelerate infrastructure development”.

Interesting facts about the state of Indonesia’s transportation infrastructure:

· Economic Losses due to traffic jams in Jakarta was estimated to be Rp12.8 trillion/year which includes the value of time, fuel costs, and health costs.

· If until 2020 there are no improvements made on the transportation systems then the estimated economic losses will reach Rp65 trillion/year.

· From my personal experience, it takes at least 90 minutes to get from the city center in Jakarta to the airport even though the distance is just about 25km.

Indonesia’s Vice Minister for Transportation, Dr. Bambang Susantono, has announced Indonesia’s commitment to improve its transportation infrastructure in order to boost the country’s economic growth. He will be sharing his perspectives at Urban Transport World Asia 2011 on Indonesia’s transportation masterplan:

· Key project timelines and opportunities for partners and investors

· Optimizing public transport networks: How to develop and attain greater capacity from the current transportation network

· What are the collaborative initiatives that are being spearheaded to encourage private investors to take part in these projects?
