2011 steel scrap statistics according to the latest Ferrous Metals World Mirror

In 2011, Turkey, South Korea and China increased substantially their scrap imports by an average of 11% while the USA, the world’s top scrap exporter, increased its shipments abroad by 18.6% during the same period. These statistics were according to the latest Ferrous Metals World Mirror by the BIR.

In terms of steel scrap consumption, both the EU-27 and Turkey increased their steel scrap usage which outstripped their respective upturns in crude steel production. In contrast, scrap consumption in China climbed only 3.3% to 91 million tonnes whereas the country’s crude steel production jumped 9.1% to 683.9 million tonnes.
