#Mining in Space is NOT a distant dream?
“WHAT?” Well at least that was my first reaction when i saw this headline “Space-mining mission can do world of good”. To be honest, i actually thought this was a hoax, and out of curiousity, i click on the link to see if it was an overdue April’s fool joke.
Well it is not. A project to mine asteroids in space, announced in US this week and this project has gotten “A star” investors all hyped up. It helps that this new Venture, aptly named Planetary Resources, is backed by two Silicon Valley titans and filmmaker James Cameron.
This project however, has its fair share of critics – experts are raising serious questions on the costs of getting the project off the ground, to whether even the current technology is viable to get anything from space down to earth in a commercially viable way.
But i must say that i am personally excited and intrigued by this whole idea of mining and mining in the next frontier. Or maybe i am just another sucker still sold on the idea of space travel for commoners in time to come (which seems like a distant dream).
At Asia Mining Congress, though we are not so radically as to explore mining in space, we are still bringing miners from the key emerging markets and mining frontiers together to discuss partnerships and investment opportunities. (well at least those based on planet earth).
