The five-week illegal strike involved murder and violence at Implats’ Rustenburg platinum mine, appears to have ended.

Implats stated on 24 February 2012 that it had agreed with the National Union of Mineworkers and Cosatu that it would re-employ the striking workers.

The workers will not be paid for the days on which they were striking.

Workers who reapplied for their jobs will today be reinstated on the same terms .

The strike’s impact has reduced operational capacity, and only 15 000 workers can be taken back, not all 17 200 workers who were fired.

Six employees at its Rustenburg mine had been brutally assaulted on 23 February 2012 – they are receiving treatment at the mine’s hospital.

It was stated that the company had lost an estimated 100000oz of platinum production in the five weeks of the illegal strike.
