Global reassessment of #risk drives more Asian investors to #Canada
According to Doug Beaton, Vice President and Director of Corporate Finance Advisory services at #Deloitte & Touche, Asian companies are looking increasingly more at partnering with locals in Canada to secure access to the region’s vast mineral wealth.
Asian capital represents a significant source of fundraising for Canadian miners and Canada continues to be a region generating vast interest from China. It’s no surprise that #China Investment Corporation opened its first overseas office in Canada and chose the region for its only energy sector equity investment.
And Beaton acknowledges that it’s near impossible to build a mine in Canada without Asian capital, or at least, an Asian partner. While it’s true that Asian mining companies were previously buying up mines, they seem to be looking increasingly more at partnerships with local companies to secure access to resources while avoiding the heightened risk which comes with an outright acquisition.
Canada is seen as a safe haven for Asian investors in the mining sector- but will the volume of investments & partnerships continue next year? Asia Mining Congress is dedicating an entire day to projects in Canada and the rest of the Americas region to give Asian investors a rare opportunity to evaluate new investment opportunities on their doorstep.
