Business leaders struggling with basic management skills

Businessman browsing report According to Roffey Park’s latest annual Management Agenda report, business leaders are struggling with basic managerial skills.

The report, which surveyed 1,460 managers, found that the top strategy organisations are adopting for the future is leadership development. However basic managerial skills, such as dealing with underperforming staff and managing change, are not up to scratch according to the report.

Now in its 16th year, the report offers valuable insight into emerging workplace trends, and what organisations can expect of the year to come. Here are some of its key findings:

  • 55% of organisations say that leadership development is a key strategy for them for the future, with efficiency savings with 51% following closely behind.
  • 40% of managers report that underperformance is not tackled at all well in their organisation.
  • Worryingly, 55% of managers say that redundancies are still handled, at best, only adequately.
  • Managers from organisations where redundancies were well managed were five times less likely to report reduced performance and productivity.
  • 45% of managers say that there is a low level of support in their organisations. When asked about use of incentives since the downturn, increased responsibility scored the highest, with 61% of managers saying it was used more frequently.
