5 Fatal Leadership Flaws – that consistently lead to leadership failure
In their book, The Extraordinary Leader, John Zenger and Joseph Folkman identified what they referred to as the “5 fatal flaws” of leadership. Based on their extensive research, the following patterns of behaviour consistently lead to a failure in leadership.
- Inability to learn from mistakes
- Lack of core interpersonal skills and competencies
- Lack of openness to new or different ideas
- Lack of accountability
- Lack of initiative
Whilst the list may seem obvious to many, it never fails to amaze how many leaders consistently demonstrate these fatal flaws and in the process cause so much damage to others, their organisation and ultimately themselves. With a little dose of humility, honest feedback and support, these flaws are able to be eradicated. It’s not easy but very possible.
