10 ways to create a Great Place to Work

In 2012 the Great Place to Work Institute surveyed over 5500 organisations globally and 3 million employees.In the 2012 Great Place to Work Australian survey, 6 out of the top 10 companies were in the Information Technology space. Across the Top 10 Australian companies the following were ways these companies went about “creating a great place to work”:

  1. Offer team members a free day off on their birthday
  2. Allow, where possible, one day a week to work from home
  3. Paid maternity and paternity leave
  4. More part-time and job-share positions
  5. Well –being programs such as gym membership and anti-flu shots
  6. Make the work place family friendly
  7. Greater flexibility with working hours
  8. Offer grievance counselling
  9. Let staff take time off when they need to
  10. Flexible annual leave (offer buy-back schemes)

Great work places have the competitive advantage for attracting and retaining talent. What creative approaches have you taken to make your organisation a great place to work?
