How to measure the ROI from employee training

Demonstrating a measured ROI from training is both necessary and difficult. That said there are 4 levels to measuring a ROI on any investment made in employee training and development. Each is important and interdependent. These include:

  1. Level 1: Reaction – to what extent did the participant enjoy and find the learning experience of value and relevance.
  2. Level 2: Learning – what new knowledge and skills did the learner acquire that will help them be more successful.
  3. Level3: Behaviour Change – to what extent has the learning been applied to best effect and what has changed as a consequence.
  4. Level 4: Business Impact – what specific indicators are used to measure the impact of the applied learning on the business – e.g. increase in closure rates, increased sales yield, decreased staff turnover, improved customer ratings etc
