How to build leaders in the 21 Century

HBDI, Hermann International, Whole Brain Thinking, thinking

Everything is and will continue to change. A leader’s ability to adapt and help others understand why and what needs to change and then secure their followership,  is the essence of leadership. If we accept this, then we have a responsibility to help and equip leaders with the skills and capacity to better understand how to manage change.

Leaders, like all of us, find it hard to change because of developed thinking habits or mindsets which shape our brains. The accumulation of knowledge and experience and reinforcement of current mindsets, makes it difficult to change. So in order for us to be able to change we first need to learn to change how we think. And we can because thinking is a skill. The Hermann International Instrument called the Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument – HBDI, provides an opportunity to understand one’s thinking preferences across the distribution of the 4 different modes of thinking, each one different and equal in importance.

Effective leaders of the future will be “thought leaders” in that they will have developed the capacity to use and access different modes of thinking to address differing challenges.

Our capacity and ability to adapt starts with an appreciation of our current thinking preference across the 4 modes and to develop our flexibility to be able to seamlessly access different modes and use a larger playing field to draw our thinking from. This means we’ll be able to adapt our mindsets by changing our thinking habits – the hallmark of effective 21 Century Leaders. How we change, is to learn how we think.
