Leadership – it starts from within!
Leadership starts from the inside – how we lead is an expression of our character. It’s a representation of our nature. Leadership is about soul. Management is about science.
At the risk of igniting the nature vs. nurture debate about leadership, let me declare my position upfront: Leadership can be learnt. Each one of us has the capacity to learn how to be more effective at leading ourselves and others. It’s true that some of us find leading less challenging and something that comes more naturally. This is not to say we were born that way or simply lucky. Rather it’s because of the choices and effort we have made to become a leader.
Just stop for a moment to think of leaders you most admire as well as those you disdain. What comes to mind? No doubt the differentiating descriptors included amongst others; integrity, honesty, commitment, courage, empathy, humility, conviction, self confidence, principled, self belief, bold, creative, compassionate, resilient.
Now ask yourself: Are these attributes or qualities developable? Do I have the capacity and potential to learn and demonstrate these qualities? What would be the benefits to me and to others of demonstrating these qualities? What stops me from demonstrating these qualities? To start or to further develop these attributes, what do I need to do?
Never before has the need for leadership been so great. Organisations in which a leadership legacy enables an adaptive, collaborative, learning, engaging and flourishing environment and culture, will have the greatest competitive advantage. Regardless of what you do within your organisation and your present circumstances, you have the power to show leadership. It’s your choice.
