Medical tourism is booming in Asia, especially in countries like India, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea and Thailand. There are massive amount of opportunities to develop the medical tourism industry in the Asia region with support from the government.

People seek medical treatment overseas for many reasons. It could be due to high medical cost and long waiting times for treatment in their home countries. It could also be possible that the medical technology in other countries is more advanced. Furthermore, with rising low-cost international air travel, it is now cheaper to travel to these countries, such as Thailand, to obtain treatment.

The Asean Economic Community (AEC) has plans to boost the medical tourism industry within the region. It is observed that there are more mergers and acquisitions among the Asean healthcare providers which present more opportunities for medical tourism.
