Engineering Genetic Cures at Stem Cells USA

Stem Cells USA & Regenerative Medicine CongressAt Stem Cells USA, Sangamo Biosciences discussed how they created a technology that aims to modify stem cells at the genetic level to permanently alter the course of a disease. Zinc-finger nucleases are used to insert DNA at specific sites to correct mutations in genes that lead to diseases. This technology is highly efficient at modifying the genetics of cell populations, including various types of stem cells. Stem cells with corrected, engineered DNA can then be delivered to patients suffering from genetic diseases or genetic mutations which cause them to be susceptible to a disease.
