Biopharmaceutical Industry – A booming business indeed
Welcome to 2011, everyone!
It’s a new decade that we are embarking into right now and the new year promises numerous opportunities for investments and money-making across in the biopharmaceutical industry. Patents are expiring (you probably already know that from all the chatter last year), new biotechnology companies are emerging rapidly in Asia, and even the FDA has approved the first biosimilar last year.
As President Obama of the United States of America so puts it – “change is here!” and I would expect the biopharmaceutical industry to experience several phases of changes too! India, a country long known for its IT savvy and highly skilled workforce has successfully branched into the biotechnology scene and has certainly made its mark to be known as “THE destination for future R&D”. Studies have shown that research and development in Vaccines have contributed at least 60% of the income generated in the country’s biotechnology industry.
The Government of India has also taken an aggressive approach to build up this industry by providing funds to promote growth through its initiatives like Biotech Industry Partnership Programme (BIPP), and Biotech Industry Research Assistance Programme (BIRAP). The world has understood the value of India as a R&D hotspot and they simply cannot lose the opportunity of being in India. Just look at the turn out at Biopharma India Convention last December and the number of acquisitions of Indian biopharmaceutical companies and in the past two years and you would know what I mean.

Have a wonderful 2011!
