Selected from among the key presentations given at the 2012 Agriculture Investment Summit, here Kona Haque of Macquarie Capital (Europe) Ltd outlines figures drawn from research into agriculture investment channels.

In this presentation, Haque opens with the (so far) undisputed thematic that is driving this market – namely the imbalance between the global growth in demand and the increasing strain on supply, and the subsequent impact on food and fuel products.

“Food availability in developing countries will need to increase almost 60 per cent, equivalent to a 42 per cent growth in global food production respectively.” OECD-FAO (2009)

Following this opening, Haque takes readers by the hand along a logical thread that leads us through the deliberation process for investing in this increasingly popular asset class, beginning with the initial attractions, which include benefits such as strong return potential, diversification and low correlation, to the access channels, such as listed agricultural equities / ETFs, commodity futures and farmland, including a relative performance analysis of these.

He concludes with short term and long term price and performance outlooks for the 7 major agriculture products:
