‘Your Company in a Day’ – www.tuempresaenundia.cl – was started by President Sebastian Piñera, the Ministry of Economics, and Tomas Flores. Their newly launched platform has the potential to help up to 370,000 informal entrepreneurs. The president noted how important it is to switch to having electronic signatures, stating that not having one will soon be the same as not having an identity card.

This new system will serve as alternative to the current system and each entrepreneur is free to choose. The new system gets rid of the paper work and cuts costs tremendously. The old system consisted of multiple procedures, which if delayed, can become quite costly. On average, an eight day long delay can cost between $250,000 and $350,000 in the Santiago region. However, in other areas, time and costs can double.

This system has already been implemented in New Zealand, Australia, Canada, and Singapore. This system is thought to help facilitate entrepreneurship, and can help Chile’s economy.

Following the Supreme Court’s 2010 ruling in Citizens United, corporations have been given the green light to spend their corporate funds on partisan politics. The resulting influx of money into the political sphere resulted in the most well-funded political campaigns ever seen in 2012, and undeniably increased the role of money in politics.

In their 2010 decision, the courts explicitly endorsed a disclosure clause – which would require corporations to share their political contribution information – but such a law was subsequently struck down in Congress. Recently, a group of nearly half a million citizens have petitioned the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) to require disclosure of corporate money in politics.

The movement was started by ten law professors who cautioned against the lack of transparency in politics that the Citizens United case has enabled. They say that investors should have a right to know when a corporation is involved politically.

The opposition is lead by the National Association of Manufacturers, the US Chamber of Commerce, and the Business Roundtable. They scoff at the comment-writing campaign, labeling it “astroturfing” – a faux-grassroots campaign engineered by liberal interest groups. They suggest that the SEC has a number of back-logged tasks – including the Dodd-Frank Act and the Jobs Act – that should take priority over a write-in campaign.

Mary Jo White, the newly appointed SEC chairwoman, faces a historic decision. The petition is the largest of its kind, and the issue seems to pit popular interest against that of wealthy corporations. The SEC put the petition on a long-term agenda, but as of yet has not scheduled any direct action.
