Nizam Hamid, Deputy Head of Lyxor ETFs highlighted the key trends in ETF investing for 2011 and gave his outlook for 2012 at the ETF & Indexing Investments conference in October. His key trends for ETF investments were:
- Regulators have provided a focus on risk through different means
- Questions about systemic risk and sources of risk in securities lending and synthetic ETFs
- Lyxor ETFs hold physical assets with an index swap and a target of 0% counterparty risk through a daily reset mechanism, transparency through daily disclosure of fund holdings and swap level
- ETP trading trends continue to show both increased use by investors across asset classes
- On exchange reported ETP traded volume shows a higher proportion in swap-based UCITS ETFs
- ETP flows in 2011 have been dominated by three main areas – German and US equities and gold
- As the ETF market evolves we expect a greater focus on
- Innovation through access to hidden assets such as volatility
- Innovation through more efficient management of exposures in broad commodity markets
- Innovation and transparency as being the key for products in 2012
