Nizam Hamid, Deputy Head of Lyxor ETFs highlighted the key trends in ETF investing for 2011 and gave his outlook for 2012 at the ETF & Indexing Investments conference in October. His key trends for ETF investments were:

  • Regulators have provided a focus on risk through different means
  • Questions about systemic risk and sources of risk in securities lending and synthetic ETFs
  • Lyxor ETFs hold physical assets with an index swap and a target of 0% counterparty risk through a daily reset mechanism, transparency through daily disclosure of fund holdings and swap level
  • ETP trading trends continue to show both increased use by investors across asset classes
  • On exchange reported ETP traded volume shows a higher proportion in swap-based UCITS ETFs
  • ETP flows in 2011 have been dominated by three main areas – German and US equities and gold
  • As the ETF market evolves we expect a greater focus on
    • Innovation through access to hidden assets such as volatility
    • Innovation through more efficient management of exposures in broad commodity markets
    • Innovation and transparency as being the key for products in 2012
