These statistics were according to the latest Ferrous Metals World Mirror by the BIR.

In terms of steel scrap consumption, both the EU-27 and Turkey increased their steel scrap usage which outstripped their respective upturns in crude steel production. In contrast, scrap consumption in China climbed only 3.3% to 91 million tonnes whereas the country’s crude steel production jumped 9.1% to 683.9 million tonnes.

Here’s his response:

I’d say the bulk commodities because nobody can get enough. The space-age metals, lithium, rare earth elements and tantalum, as well as gold and diamonds. The world is heading for a serious supply crunch in the near future and there are no new large mines on the horizon, while the large producers are getting old and very expensive. The new mines coming on stream are typically small with limited life-of-mine.

Willem has held training courses across the globe and trained top companies such as Vale, BHP, Canaccord, Aggreko and First Quantum.

To find out more about the latest trends in the mining industry and to discuss these with Willem himself, don’t miss out on the 3 Day MBA in Mining, taking place in various locations throughout the year.

When I came across this article, I was excited to hear that Ma’aden are really ramping up their mining projects. It really puts the spotlight on the Middle East as a hot mining destination.

What is interesting about the implementation of the King Abdullah Project is that it is also planning on developing commercial, housing and educational facilities. This in turn means that mining projects on such a large scale can really contribute to the well-being of whole communities and help create jobs and better living standards.

Ma’aden is the largest mining company in Saudi Arabia and they are really setting an example to other local mining companies in the Middle East and North African (MENA) region.

I for one will certainly be keeping an eye on the developments of the $6.9 billion phosphate project.

The Ministry of Industry, the State Council Development Research Centre and industry experts predict that an oversupply of iron ore will cause a continual drop in prices. Although this is so, The Vice President of China Steel Industry Association, Wang Qi, felt that the price volatility will be much less than last year. In the first quarter, the national sees a growth rate drop of 2.8%, mainly due to the fall in demand for automotive, cement, machinery and electronic products. The number of steel producers in China have increased greatly over the years, causing vicious competition and the need to cut prices. The booming growth in iron ore a few years ago has attracted many traders to jump onto the bandwagon to earn the extra cash. The only apparent way to resolve the oversupply is for non-competitive enterprises to exit the industry, and to accelerate the technology development process to produce low cost and high quality steel products and services.

I read an interesting article on Mining Journal Online this morning, about recent growth in mining in Burkina Faso. Although the country’s mining sectors are young (its Chamber of Mines was only officially inaugurated in September last year), Burkina Faso’s mining industry has grown in leaps and bounds over the past four years. In fact, the country’s government has put in place development programmes in recent years involving infrastructure investment, to encourage further exploration.

As Mining Jounal reports, “research from Metals Economics Group (MEG) shows that in 2011, exploration budgets rose to a record in all regions globally, with Africa showing the biggest annual percentage gain. Among the most active countries in Africa was Burkina Faso, which rose from twelfth place in 2009 to third on MEG’s latest list of World Exploration Trends”.

Gold is the main commodity produced in the West African country, with output having increased steadily since the revival of commercial production there nearly five years ago when the Taparko-Bouroum mine poured its first gold. However, zinc mines are also being developed in the country, with other notable mineral occurrences including manganese, copper, nickel and antimony.

You can access the full Mining Journal article here.

We’ll be covering mining in Burkina Faso at this year’s MENA Mining Show, with a case study from Canadian miner, Riverstone Resources. Director, President and COO, Dwayne Melrose, will take delegates through the company’s experiences in Burkina Faso, operating the Karma Project in the North of the country.

According to the Steel Wire Market report by Global Industry Analysts, infrastructure expansion and higher disposable incomes leading to greater ownership of consumer durables and cars in these markets comprise the primary factors driving the rise.

American demand for the metal is also expected to improve along with the gradual recovery in the construction and automobile sectors. In all, the global steel wire market is expected to grow in response to the expected compounded annual growth rate of 5.4% for the Asia-Pacific region, led by markets such as China, South Korea, India and Indonesia.

Find out more about industry trends in both ferrous and non-ferrous scrap metals at the World Scrap Metal Congress 2012 held in Shanghai, China on 20 and 21 September.

The world wide web is quite scarce when it comes to providing information on the mining sector in the MENA region. I know this because being the conference manager for the MENA Mining Show, I have had difficulties in conducting my own research into this topic area.

So, I would like to recommend the following which are most useful for me in terms of keeping up to date on anything to do with mining in the region:

Mining-technology

Mining journal online

Industrial minerals

Mining in Middle East and North Africa

MENAFN News

I hope these prove as useful and informative as they are to me! What would be your top 5 sources?
