#Social network for expats popping up in South #Korea

“It started off as something personal and then it ended up being people joining the site and making friends. At first it was for English, language exchange, teaching English, as well as foreigners learning Korean,” said James Cowan, the brain behind Come Together Korea.

Facebook and Cyworld are not the only tools for social networking in Korea. Come Together Korea is an open online social networking channel for all expats in Korea. James Cowan, the creator of the social network in Korea has been in Korea for more than three years, but he found that it is difficult to make a number of friends. That is how he got to come up with Come Together Korea.

“Facebook and those other big networks are very global, huge, and it’s really tough to feel part of a community inside Korea. It’s hard to meet people in your area. This is different because it is just focused on Korea. Everyone on the website is living in Korea and you can search for people by area.”

At the moment, the online community is not commercially driven, but James expects it to be in the future. If the social networking site goes successful, he will start up sister social networking websites in Asia, for instance, Come Together Taiwan, Come Together Hong Kong or Come Together Japan.

James is not alone. Devin Rupert is the creator of social network named ‘Linked Seoul’ for business networking. There is a need for such networking tool because the expat community is small and expats need another way to get out and mingle with others. Now the site has more than 1,000 members and organizes professional networking events such as Wine-Down Wednesday. The events help make business deals done.

These social networking sites will bridge the gap of lack of communication and information on culture and business. They will be second-to-none places to get to meet new people in Seoul.

Korea Investment Summit will be held from 26-28 March in Seoul, Korea. Find out more about Korea Investment Summit by clicking here.
