In Ovum’s latest survey, it was highlighted at operators lost $US13.9 billion in lost SMS revenues in 2011 due to social messaging.

The bad news is that Ovum expects the decline is only going to get worse as savvy mobile consumers give SMS the flick and telco operators need to rework their “legacy services” to secure their position in the messaging market.

“Social messaging has disrupted traditional services, and operators’ revenues in this area will come under increasing pressure,” Ovum consumer analyst Neha Dharia said.

According to Ms Dharia, telcos need to look at social messaging as an opportunity but a successful strategy must implement closer co-operation between telcos as they face the challenge posed by major internet players.

Operators may also benefit from forging closer relationships with app developers, share end-user data with them and allow integration with the user’s social connections.

“Tapping into the creativity of app developers, forming industry-wide collaborations, and leveraging their usage data and strong relationships with subscribers are the key ways for operators to ensure that they hold their ground in the messaging market,” Ms Dharia said.

“Working closely with handset vendors will also be important; they control some of the most popular social messaging apps, and can also provide preloaded applications,” she added.

South Africa, Africa’s largest economy, is falling behind other countries on the continent when it comes to the number of people who have access to the Internet.

That is according to the latest Internet World Stats figures on connectivity rates in Africa.

Internet World Stats’ research, which was completed in December, says Nigeria tops Africa at 45 million Internet users, while Egypt, Morocco and Kenya, respectively, follow the West African nation with 21.7 million, 15.7 million and 10.6 million people being connected.

SA ranks fifth, with 6.8 million people with access to the Internet, ahead of Tanzania which has 4.9 million Internet users.

World Wide Worx MD Arthur Goldstuck says SA’s low Internet connectivity rate, as compared to Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and Kenya, is as a result of the country’s smaller population size of 50 million people.

Dubai shopping site JadoPado.com says customers are turning to online

Estimates of e-commerce doubling in the region by 2016 are “off the mark”, according to the founder of a Dubai-based retail website.

Omar Kassim of JadoPado.com estimates online sales in the UAE alone will triple this year, making 2012 a tipping point for e-commerce.

What does this mean for the region? In the next few years, could online shopping could be set to replace the big Gulf malls?

“A recent report by Euromonitor suggested at the moment customers in the region spend around $1.1 billion through the internet. By 2016, it will double to $2.2 billion,” says Kassim. “However, we think that the figure is off the mark. It does not include services sold over the Internet and popular group buying sites which are huge here in the UAE. Based on our own sales, we expect the market to triple in 2012 compared to 2011.”

That would mean it is growing at one of the fastest rates in the world.

GoNabit and YouGovSiraj recently polled 2,196 GoNabit users in the UAE, Kuwait, Jordan and Lebanon – findings show a positive outlook for e-commerce in the region, with 93% of poll respondents positive towards e-commerce despite problems of security, availability and delivery.

“JadoPado.com has passed turnover of US$ 1 million in just ten months operating in the UAE and things have really taken off in the last three months. We added to our delivery destinations by bringing on Al Ain and Ajman last week, and are close to full country coverage within the next four to six weeks.

“Customers are more comfortable about using online experiences and are embracing the convenience and cost savings that e-commerce provides.”

JadoPado.com is an online retailer, with 70% of its sales attributed to the booming smartphone and tablet markets. Major launches such as the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S have boosted sales and increased demand for what Kassim calls “instant gratification” shopping.

“The beauty of shopping online is the convenience,” says Kassim. “Dubai has a mall culture but we are slowing seeing that being eroded away as savvy shoppers want products to get to them minus the hassle. We deliver to their door, at a time that suits them, and offer better prices than most physical stores due to their higher cost structures.

“Coupon and discount sites like Living Social and Cobone.com have really paved the way for e-commerce here in the UAE,” adds Kassim. “We have seen some general issues in the e-commerce space with regards to delivery and fulfillment, which is something that has always concerned us at JadoPado. That’s why we are unique in having our own inventory and delivery fleet, which means we have a high degree of control over the customer experience – which is helping us to make the difference.”

To find out more from JadoPado.com – register to attend The Internet Show Middle East this April in Dubai. Omar Kassim will be discussing how to drive uptake through reliable delivery and optimum pricing models.
