GIA – Indonesia in the Top 5 Emerging Markets

According to the Global Intelligence Alliance (@GIAGroup), in their Business Perspectives on Emerging Markets 2012-2017 Report Brazil, Russia, India and China (BRIC) will retain their positions as the worlds’ top emerging markets for 2012-2017. In the report, over a quarter of the companies polled also name Indonesia fifth after the BRIC countries as the next upcoming emerging market.

The report mentions that international companies’ reasons for investing in emerging markets can be complex, but are usually centred around the potential for building long term revenues and global market share more rapidly than is possible in established markets.

For most of the organizations, the main regrets in their emerging market strategies are not adapting more to local conditions, not entering sooner and not acquiring better market intelligence.

Indonesia is the next big emerging market on the scene and the game here still belongs to anyone. Major multinational brands have started to sit up and take notice of this highly insulated Asian economy and are looking to leverage on its vastly untapped potential.

Be it retail, hospitality, FMCG, online media, automotive, healthcare or financial services the opportunities to capture a sizeable market share are still present. Indonesia however, does have a unique set of characteristics and style of business that may not be the easiest to overcome. On the same note it also has some distinct advantages; given the proliferation of Smartphones and mobile devices Indonesia, the opportunity to leapfrog to the next generation of digital interaction is significant.

With a highly bullish market, Indonesia largely insulated from external events presents an opportunity to gain a sizeable market advantage in the region. The race is on, and it’s still anyone’s game.
