Facebook to Launch Mobile Phone?

The New York Times reported a leak by a Facebook employee today which indicated plans to release a Facebook smart phone sometime next year. Facebook has its eyes set to dominate the mobile internet market, the company has apparently hired hardware and software engineers who have worked on Apple’s IPhone. Rumours also indicate that they may be partnering with Taiwan’s HTC.

This leak comes at a very important time for Facebook, with lawsuits brewing after the company went public this month (see ‘Updated: The Facebook IPO Fiasco’ for more details).

Although Facebook has neither confirmed or denied the rumours, this could prove to be a big win for them. Mobile devices are predominately used for socialising, and if they can capitalise on this and revolutionise this, as they did online, we can’t see how this would not be a success.
