About the Hwa Chong Virtual Learning Campus

Hwa Chong Institution Virtual Campus

We are all gearing up for the Digital Education Show Asia this September! With close to 30 Asian-wide educators confirmed for the event, this is the best place for professors, lecturers, and teachers alike to come together for peer-learning, and discuss the new possibilities in digital education. With that being said, I would like to do a quick introduction on one of our speaker schools, Hwa Chong Institution, Singapore, and they develop the virutal campus, or also known as the Hwa Chong Nexus (HCnX).

Hwa Chong Institution is part of the Future School programme initiated by the Ministry of Education Singapore in 2008. Under this programme, Hwa Chong will continue to encourage its students to expand their IT skills by leveraging on web 2.0 technologies in its learning curriculum. The HCnX is designed to facilitate and catalyse independent learning and collaborative explorations, and partnering solution providers include ST Electronics, KooBits, Amdon, and Zepth. Perhaps one of the most notable achievement is the establishment of a global academy. With a set-up of a satellite campus in Beijing, and an introduction of an e-learning course with Standford University, students in Hwa Chong can now interact with students from different countries, and work together to solve research problems or create new products. Alumni (which includes the likes of national leaders, industry captains and university professors) can also join in to act as mentors to current students, to provide valuable insight and guidance in student’s research and learning. What’s more, a personal portal and e-portfolio can help students help track their development and attain greater self awareness. Mentors can also better understand the student’s growth through this platform. Ultimately, Dr Hon Chiew Weng, Principal at Hwa Chong Institution, emphasized that the “bottomline is not so much about the technology, but about using the technology to enhance a student’s development”.

Ms Adeline Tan, Education Consultant at Hwa Chong Institution will be present at The Digital Education Show Asia, held in Kuala Lumpur from 25-27 September, to share on her experiences in the e-learning field. For more information about the event, please download the agenda here.
