Blood, brains and Charlie Teo – Mind & Its Potential 09
What better way to spend a warm summer’s morning than in a packed auditorium hearing Dr Charlie Teo give a blow by blow account of a brain operation – you could have heard a pin drop as Charlie took us up through the nostril and into the brain to remove a tumor. Dr Teo is renowned as one of Australia’s leading neurosurgeons and has defied the rule (with amazing results) that says if there are tumors on both sides of a person’s brain they are deemed to be inoperable. As well as giving a "user friendly" guide to the brain, Dr Teo presented some very moving case studies – one in which a young girl had a tumor that caused her to put on a huge amount of weight in a very short time. The girl was misdiagnosed as having an eating disorder and her mother at one stage was diagnosed as having Munchhausen’s disease and accused of deliberately overfeeding her daughter to get attention. Finally the girl received the correct diagnosis and the tumor was removed with very positive results.
You can watch Dr Teo’s presentation online by visiting the Mind & Its Potential 2010 website http://www.mindanditspotential.com.au/ and registering to view the video. We will be releasing further clips from Mind & Its Potential 2009 over the next few months – so enjoy and pass on the word to others!
