We accept that Terrapinn has a responsibility to the broader communities we serve. We accept we have a responsibility to make society a better place for all, one in which all people suffer less, find greater meaning and live happier lives.

It is for this reason Terrapinn sponsors and is closely aligned to Essential Education. The aim of Essential Education is to empower children, youth and adults to make a positive difference in the world through developing their innate capacity to be kind and wise and to live in a way that will bring peace and wellbeing to themselves and the people around them.

Essential Education functions to create a more peaceful world by providing resources, training and connection that enables people to set up Essential Education programmes in their own community: in schools, hospitals, hospices, prisons, workplaces and at home

Have a read of the latest Newsletter to find out more about how Essential Education is making the world a better and happier place for all.

Hi I’m Martin Izzard and jointed Terrapinn in March this year as a Digital Content Executive for the 12 Hour MBA Training Company. I graduated with a degree in Film and Video from the University of Wales, Newport last September and was looking for the right job which I have found at Terrapinn.

At the end of my first two weeks, I have really hit the ground running, both shooting a training video and editing one previously shot. My input and ideas have been seriously listened to and already I feel like a valued member of the team. I came to the job with a base of knowledge about producing content but each day has taught me something and I have gone home each night with a new sense of professionalism and love for my industry of work.

It’s very exciting to work for such a creative company and my first editing task features content with Bernard Desmidt, the Global Talent Director, where he talks about what the company looks for, values and how it strives to make this a great place to work. This has really put into perspective how great Terrapinn is to work for.

Tell us about your career path and how you found yourself at Terrapinn?

I have my Honours in Psychology. When I finished university, I decided to put my degree in psychology into good use as a restaurant manager – one of the few opportunities available to a small town gal J Thankfully, I decided that that was not how I wanted to spend my time, or the best years of my life, and I made the decision to move to Johannesburg. The rest, as they say, is history! I joined Terrapinn close to 6 years ago. I started as a Conference Manager, worked my way to Senior Conference Manager within a year and half, and within 3 years became GM of the Telecoms and Enterprise Team. Its been a fulfilling journey that has taught me much about my own strengths and weaknesses.

What have you enjoyed most about working at Terrapinn?

My team, my events and being onsite. Being at the event is the best part of the job in my opinion. It’s where everything comes together and the magic happens!

What advice would you give a graduate who is just starting their career?

Don’t be afraid to take chances and initiative. In a world where so many people think that success is just going to come to them, employers are looking for individuals who make their own success and are hungry to achieve.

What do you do for fun?

Rockclimbing; reading; dancing; chilling with my mates. I’m a very social being and enjoy the company of others. I love a good night out on the town – I believe in working hard and playing hard!

What would you say are your greatest achievements?

I have a can do attitude. I set my mind to do something and I usually achieve my goals. A few more noteworthy ones are overcoming my fear of snakes and heights – yes I’m afraid of heights and love to rock climb! Professionally that would be building a very rewarding career for myself and finding my fit in the corporate jungle.

What book are you currently reading?

The Wizard’s First Rule by Terry Goodkind

What is your untold secret?

I’m an adrenaline junkie – fast cars; extreme sports; anything to get the blood pumping!

Hi, my name is Melanie Botoulas and I’ve just started at Terrapinn as a Business Development Manager. I completed my BCom Strategic Management Honours degree at the end of last year, and to start at a company like Terrapinn for my first corporate job has been absolutely amazing!

The training has been so helpful and I have really learnt so much. It is a very thorough process that ensures you have all the tools to get started right away. Every day is a new experience with so many new skills to be acquired. I work with such a brilliant team who really help me and make me feel so welcome.

I have started working on my first event, Submarine Networks Africa 2012, that is being held in May. It is really exciting to be dealing with industry executives and key business players and to learn more about the submarine networks industry!

I hope these Workshops have helped you continue your learning journey and that you feel the benefits from applying the learning. Let’s take the next step and continue to explore the 1st Principle that underpins our leadership effectiveness – Learning about leadership is at it’s essence, learning about self. In this Workshop we are going to explore our Thinking Preferences.

As Michael Merzenich, a leading neuroscientist, once said, “To learn is to change how you think”. How we think, determines how we behave. Therefore to change how you do things, you first need to change how your think about things! The good news is that thinking is a skill and therefore we have the ability to learn how to adapt our thinking and be more effective at problem solving, decision making, influencing others and being more creative.

Based on the Whole Brain Thinking model developed by Ned Hermann, there are 4 thinking modes:

Most of us typically demonstrate a preference to think either using our “Cerebral Mode” – (Blue and Yellow modes of thinking), or our “Limbic Mode” (Green and Red) or our “Left Mode” (Blue and Green) or our “Right Mode” (Yellow and Red). It is believed that 30% of our thinking preference is predetermined – genetically and environmentally in terms of our upbringing, education and work and life experiences. This means 70% of our thinking preference is up to us! We can change the way we think. Our opportunity is to develop our capacity to become more “whole brained” in our thinking and use each of the 4 modes. It’s all about how we choose to think.

As a next step, I encourage you to identify your thinking preference and in order to do so you will need to work with an accredited user of the Hermann Brain Dominance Instrument. Click on this link and make contact with any of the global Hermann International offices or find out whether anyone you work with is an accredited user and start your journey in developing your ability to think in a more “whole brained” manner.

Discover your ability to be more effective by developing your thinking skills. If you have worked with the HBDI, let me know your experiences and how more effective you have become as a result of being more “whole brained” in your thinking.

It was the 3rd and final fixture between league leaders Amnesia FC and Terrapinn FC – with Amnesia, the only team Terrapinn had failed to claim a victory against to date.

In keeping with their name, Amnesia had probably forgotten their match report from the last outing – in which they also managed to forget the truer reflection of the game or any kind of sportsmanship.

Credit to them though they must have been indulging in some memory training sessions recently, rather than set piece training, as the one thing they hadn’t forgotten to do last night was incessantly moan at every indecision like in previous fixtures….at least one piece of form stayed intact for them last night.

…”the rock between the sticks that is rockier than a rock star rocky mountain, plus more rocks in his back pocket made of rock…” looking less rocky last night, and more stoney, statuesque like.

Moving on quickly to the game at hand – Because Terrapinn went down 2-0 early on in last night’s game, before going on to smash Amnesia 10-4 with so many pieces of good football and saved shots too numerous to mention and even remember (it must be contagious!) the simplest thing to say for this week’s report is: KARMA.

Terrapinn FC did what they always do best and that was respecting their opposition and playing as a team, with some great individual skills on display too. Everyone was in the mix, including the score sheet, defence and attack. Easily the best performance of the season and well deserved. I don’t think any one person deserved man of the match last night, so instead my man of the match nomination is actually for goal of the match, scored by our Scottish mascot Gavin who dummied and rolled past two defenders before chipping the ball into the far post!!! Pick that out! – As Andy would say.

In fairness, this was a win we did want and perhaps did not think we were good enough to get, with Amnesia definitely a side showing they can play football on previous occasions. But, last night confirmed that we area match for all sides and we can play football on our day too….Three games to go and promotion is now for us to lose, and not win…Let’s keep it going Turtles!

And finally, on a sadder note, our condolences go out to Amnesia; with reports last night stating they had contracted yet another medical condition, namely Insomnia – with no one managing to sleep after last night’s match…apparently the only remedy being a chance to redeem themselves in division 4 next season?…
