CEO Brainstorm: an interview with easyjet, airBaltic, Vueling, Germanwings and Norwegian Air Shuttle
Imagine sitting in a room with these people: Carolyn McCall, CEO of easyjet – Bertold Flick, previous CEO of airBaltic – Alex Cruz, CEO of Vueling – Thomas Winkelmann, CEO of Germanwings – Daniel Skjeldam, CCO of Norwegian Air Shuttle – and CNN Anchor Richard Quest. Now imagine the fireworks if these leading travel minds were to brainstorm strategies for low cost carriers to retain momentum in a slow-growth era.
This group got together for the CEO Brainstorm at the World Low Cost Airlines Congress in London last year. They discussed the following strategies to help LCCS adapt to an era of slower growth:
· Concentrating less on increasing traffic and more on increasing yield per seat
· Creating a strategy to selectively use primary airports
· Effectively targeting cost conscious business travellers
· Utilising loyalty schemes and FFPs
· Joining partnerships and alliances
· Creating schedules that allow transfers, and are more attractive to business travellers
· Moving beyond trans-national ownership to deal with regulatory obstacles
