Southwest merger gets a slow start

Airlines hit record highs for on-time flights and luggage handlingSouthwest Airlines’ conversion of AirTran service into Southwest has had a rocky start in Atlanta’s airport, according to a report in the Atlanta Journal Constitution.

The airline, which is merging with AirTran, has had to temporarily shift some Southwest flights in Atlanta back to AirTran service.

The flights shifting back to AirTran include service from Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport to Los Angeles, Chicago Midway, Phoenix, Denver and Las Vegas, the paper reports.

Part of the reason for the delay is the repainting of the exteriors of the plane and the redesigning of the interiors of AirTran’s fleet into Southwest’s.

Another reason: The airline is having trouble connecting travelers between AirTran and Southwest flights.
